York Uni does not listen to the student voice haven’t you guys learned. The only answer to end this strike is back to work legislation

  2. bored and pissed off

    @ sml

yes, but media-covered student meetings/rallies will only put pressure on the gov’mt to act quicker

  3. Fat Kid on the Playground

BTWL won’t work, and facebook is so 2006; who even uses that crap anymore?

  4. York does not care about the studednts

Just leave the university and transfer….Thats what I am doing.

  5. CUPE member with child

Pressure York University to stay at the bargaining table until this is resolved.

  6. Hullo

Who cares let ’em have their fun. School will start at some point regardless. Bottom line is that, I just got back from a wonderful vacation!!!

  7. Rob

Organizing events and rallying is pointless. I’m so fed up at this point that I don’t even wanna go back. I would rather York cancel classes and use the time to resolve the strike. At least I can get a head start on grabbing a full time job for the summer.

  8. Here

Pressure 3903 to bargain in the real world.

  9. Fat Kid on the Playground

The real world, they should ask for a guaranteed performance bonus of 33% of their salary!

  10. Here

Go ask any of the workers at GM. Hell ask any of the other unions at York who is in the real world. 20%+ over two years? That’s real world for you. Half of them couldn’t cut it outside the ivory tower.

If the performance of the TA I had for Poli Sci is anything to go by, they don’t deserve anything. I asked for advice on the first essay I wrote in 18 years. I was told by him “I don’t have to.” This guy wanted to be a prof.

  11. hahah

    @CUPE member with child

    hahaha nice and subtle
all the students comments are about pressuring the government via media attention
then you have the random “pressure york to go to bargaining table” comment. nice

besides that the rallies are as useless as trying to become the premier so you can do a BTWL. USELESS

as i said before. all the rallies will do is make more work for the janitorial staff to take care of. better that way they might be getting a little rusty

  12. Reasonable Person

CUPE Member with Child has been so utterly brainwashed that she does not realize the stupidity of CUPE’s demands.

As I have said before, the problems with CUPE at York compared to UofT stem from the fact that York’s CUPE union consist of two groups who are both second-rate and have lesser intellect – mostly graduate liberal arts students who were rejected from UofT, and contract faculty who were unable to secure a tenure position on their own merits. There is less academic strength and more emphasis on earning money and considering this as a real job (for TAs).

So they see this as some sort of war, a battle that they must win. They don’t consider the academic integrity of their programs and their roles to be of any value.

  13. Ladyinblue

Yeah! I will go to the rally.

    Let’s go guys!

  14. pessimistic

    @Ladyinblue

I think you’re the only one. York students are known around other university as apathetic. I dont know why they complain bout York. That’s why the ta’s rock!

    Viva la revolution! Viva Cupe!

  15. may

I wonder if the president will just concede

  16. Pink Floyd

We dont need no thought control
No dark sarcasm in the classroom
Hey! Teachers! Leave them kids alone!
All in all it’s just another brick in the wall.

  17. may

    yes, love htat song

  18. Fat Kid on the Playground

    Reasonable Person,

Plenty of grads not only could get into UofT but DID and then still chose not to go there.

I wish you’d stop posting all this nonsense about how bad York is, people that have been to both schools are probably the ones best qualified to comment… I’ll show you my UofT degree if you show me yours.

  19. Reasonable Person

I’m a York student. I love York University and I chose it over UofT because I find UofT’s stale, robotic academic environment distasteful.

I am not trying to demean the university.

However, we have to address the truth here which leads to why CUPE is screwing up our education. There isn’t a big difference between accredited undergraduate programs in Canada, yes. Because these all follow accredited curriculum for the most part.

But there’s a HUGE difference between graduate programs because graduate programs are all about research. UofT is a huge bustling research centers. It’s FAR better for graduate studies than York is. Not all, but most York grad students are UofT rejects. That’s just the truth.

That’s why our CUPE union is filled with people who aren’t very bright comparatively and this is why they keep striking without any semblance of academic integrity. They see the TA job as being much more important than those at UofT. UofT grad students see it for what it is – a part time job to get additional income while you complete your advanced degree, which is the important thing that they are motivated for. Meanwhile CUPE TAs care about being idealogical and “winning” battles for their work which is not work. It is an experience and temporary source of income.

Add to that the other part of CUPE, the Unit 2 s, contract faculty who were not academically bright or distinguished enough to earn tenure, and you have the reason for this strike.

To put it simply, the people in CUPE just aren’t that bright.

  20. I wonder if the persons will too

  21. mike

I’ll bring my uzi and host the 9am drive by.
At 9 am exactly, every york student at the pond road picket lines duck for cover, and while the cupe members look at you like idiots, i will open fire.

    SOUNDS LIKE A PLAN GUYS!

  22. mike

If you are a cop and reading this, that was a fucking joke you fucking retard, go tackle some real crime. Now click the [x] on the top of your browser.

  23. York Student

I will bring my guitar to the rally!

I will make lots of noise!

  24. Indira

    Hi!

Who is coming to the rallies? I am an international student and want to participate! Tired of York campus at night, alone.

Please, tell me who is coming?

  25. Confused....

I am coming as neither pro or anti- CUPE nor pro or anti- admin…. I feel its important to be neutral

  26. intl student

i am an intl student and am super pissed….i am coming to the rally on tuesday and wednesday…TUESDAY IS ON CAMPUS..WEDNESDAY IS AT QUEENS PARK…come out and support your own future and career.

  27. G

    @ reasonable person

I am one of those people who is not a U of T reject lol. I apply got in and decided to reject their offer. I personally think there is a big myth in Toronto that everyone is dying to get into U of T. It might surprise you but some people actually like York lol (not at you reasonable person) others who think we all live and die for U of T lol. In the real world your experience is the most important. Did you know that most employers don’t ask for your GPA. They look at what you did and what you can contribute to their company (CV, resume etc).

  28. fenn

Reasonable person – you have no clue what you are talking about – I am a U of T phd teaching at york (YUFA) and I TA’d at U of T when I was a student- we were also CUPE there (3902) and we also took our TA’ing seriously and saw it as a JOB in the same way cupe 3903 members at York do and we valued the protections that cupe 3903 is fighting for – in fact we looked to them to lead the way on gains for us at UT so don’t generalize about something you have no experience with – you also clearly don’t know how to evaluate graduate programs yet – the merits of a program are determined by who you work with, the area you want to work in etc etc – therefore, it is impossible to generalize that one university is better than another in terms of some monolithic ‘graduate education’. Also, you clearly have no idea why some people wind up teaching as sessionals in Unit 2 and some get tenure track jobs right away (and often unit two members will apply for and get tenure track jobs later as well) – it has nothing to do with ‘being bright’ but much more to do with the job market forces, timing, your specialization and sometime sheer luck. You also clearly don’t know how tenure works – again it has nothing to do with ‘being bright’ – whatever that means -otherwise it could be based on eg. an IQ test and good spelling (sorry to so many of you posters) – so please, stick to giving your opinion on matters you know something about, vent if you have to but stop the baseless and inaccurate comparisons of U of T and York ….

  29. Indira

ok guys. good to know. So there is something on Tuesday too on campus?
    Count on me.

If I dont get back by the end of January or beginning of February . Im coming home because I already didnt pay the rent last month .. i can go on with landlord pressuring me to pay … shit. I hate this strike!

  30. tester

I am going to the YNH rally on Monday and Wednesday. I truly BTWL is the best option for getting to class ASAP, and am sure these two events will make a difference. It is good to see that a few people from here are attending.

Indira: what is happening on Tuesday on campus? And links?

  31. UnderGrad Int'l

Lol@ Indira. You didn’t pay your rent. Shame on you girl. I was also thinking about why should I have to pay rent and I am not in classes, but hey, I don’t want to open another can of worms.

I was thinking that all of the international students hsould write letters to their ambassadors to Canada and invite him to come on Wednesday at the rally. I am inviting my ambassador.
Also the organizers say that you can bring a personal speech to read at the rally about how this thing is affecting you. I think 3 or 4 int’l students should take to the mic with their story. We pay so much money to attend uni. Go through so much to get student visas to come to this country. (In my country we have to Fedex things to this country then it has to be mailed to this country. Argh! After all fo that….and still nto in class…wow! This is so disheartening.

*And guess what guys, a ‘vacation’ form this strike business can do you so much good. I went on ‘vacation’ yesterday and just tried to ignore this whole mess, and it gave em a chance to just breath.

  32. UnderGrad Int'l

    *breathe
