$40,000 For Relief Fund: YFS

In case you’re not subscribed to emails from your college, here’s an important one pertaining to all of us undergrads:

Dear York Students,

YFS Relief Fund:

The York Federation of Students (YFS) has created a special Relief Fund for undergraduate students facing financial hardship due to the ongoing strike. Thus, the YFS has allocated $40 000 into the Fund, and undergraduates facing financial distress due to the strike will be eligible for up to $100 in relief. All applicants will be required to present documentation relating to their financial hardship (ex. Receipt for cancelled plane ticket) along with an application form which is available on the YFS website at http://www.yfs.ca/index.php?section_id=227.  Applications will be adjudicated by the YFS Clubs Committee. The deadline for the application is as follows : January 30 at 5pm.

Those of you who really need the extra $100 better apply ASAP, because simple math dictates that only 400 lucky students will get the financial relief (assuming everyone receives the maximum amount, which itself is not much).

    nice effort
    but realistically
100 does not even cover a big portion of a full year course

  2. 4th year student

    100 $ is nothing.
    doesnt cover much

  3. macky

What are some extra costs that one could apply for? I can’t think of anything to tell them. I do live on rez but most of the costs will be AFTER due to staying longer, not necessarily now, so how can I provide documentation for that?

  4. brutal

THIS “RELIEF FUnD” THIS CAn GO FUCK ITSELF

  5. you could buy 5 lap dances at $20 a dance if anything. provided you already bring cash for one beer. beer is expensive in a strip club.

  6. tester

    it is $100 max.

expect those who are selected to get relief to get $30.

it is a PR move to save face and their jobs.

  7. theowne

This is the stupidest thing I’ve ever heard.

LOL THANKZ FOR THE 100 BUCKS GUYZ.

  8. Pally Wally

At least it covers the metropass I foolishly bought for november.

  9. LOL

since this post is essentially a repeat, i feel compelled to essentially repeat my comment from the previous post. Ahem…

    Lol
    YFS = EPIC FAIL

  10. Fuck you YFS

Fuck You YFS, You never stood to help students, now 100. bucks. You represented Cupes better than us.

  11. FUTURE

Kinda harsh. You’re right it is not a lot of money but it is some. $100 would feed you for a bit over a week.
I pissed off at YFS also with the way the handled this strike but remember this is a good will gesture and could help some people.

I am pissed off at YFS also with the disturbing way the handled this strike. That is a separate issue though.

Remember this goodwill gesture could help some students in need.

  13. B

Help students in need but you have to follow a process that essentially equates to begging and reveal a lot of private financial information.

Where is the dignity and respect for undergrads YFS?

  14. Yorker

    $100 is a joke.

  15. Meow Mix

I use a 100 bucks to wipe my ass.

  16. DUN DUN DUN

how come my posts are being deleted?…hmmmmmmmm

I say we all ask for our 1.46$ per credit back from the York Federation of Stooges which is about 55$ for 30 credit full time students. Additionally I think we’re also entitled to a refund from the 0.24$ per credit from the Canadian ‘Federation of Students’ another 9$ for 30 credit full time students.

The latter of which as far as I can tell is for an overpaid useless ISIC Card, a travel agency that anybody who seriously looks around can get a better deal outside of, and for ineffective lobbying that hasn’t worked in the last 18 years we’ve been paying them probably because they spend most of their time (as does the YFS) on political activism that has nothing to do with ameliorating the needs of students.

(Fortunately Atkinson, and Glendon students are free from supplementary YFS fees, though Glendon Students pay 0.39$ per credit to the CFS)

    Bobert,

I agree that student government is shambolic. Since most students have to work summer jobs out of necessity, and many of us hold at least one job through the year on top of full-time classes; I understand why it is hard to find good people to participate in student governance.

Either the CFS needs to get its act together (unlikely) or York should just as well pull out of it. 2010 is approaching and the undergraduates don’t stand to even be mentioned if things continue this way.

    Subject: Demanding YFS fee refund.

    Dear York Federation of Students,

My name is [Insert Name] and I am a [year of study] year student in the [Insert Program of Study] program at York University. I am writing to convey my frustrations and grievances about the current labour dispute between CUPE 3903 and the York Administration.

    [Please insert your grievances here]

I lived up to my end of the deal when I paid my YFS fees, but the YFS failed to live up to its end of the deal in providing representation and a voice for the Undergraduate student body. It seems you have forgotten that you were elected to represent Undergraduates. You failed to seek out and protect my best interest as a student and the thousands of other undergraduates. That is why I demand you refund my 64 cents per credit. Your efforts to date are not even worth 64 cents all together.

    Without an ounce of regret,

  21. CUPE Hater

Wow, $100, this coming form the group that supported the strike and tricked all of us who wanted to protest tuition fees into going to a CUPE rally first. Thanks for nothing.

  22. Bobert

There’s a petition that’s been put up for anyone interested: http://petitionspot.com/petitions/yfsfeesrefund

  23. 4th year student

    hahaha i like this petition

  24. Bobert

well considering its per credit it adds up for a person taking a full years course load

  25. Yah sorry, I posted it then I realized it was posted a day earlier, but I guess Adrian published it anyone (I can’t un-contribute).

I guess it can serve as a reminder to the important point:

YFS: Bringing fail to a whole new level. Seriously we’re better off without collective representation.
