Want to support the Union?

If you guys want to support the Union on the front lines then go out on Monday!

Monday, unions on campus and undergraduate allies will be joining us at noon at the Main Gate picket line to show their solidarity. They are organizing for a large show of support – we want to organize to meet them with the same enthusiasm, so please come out to the picket lines at noon and spread the word to all your on-campus contacts.

** On Wednesday, we are calling on all unions, allies and supporters (on and off campus) to join us for a rally at 1:00pm at the Main Gate. The rally will then visit all the picket lines. We have been receiving amazing support from other unions and are excited to have them with us on Wednesday. Please spread the word about this rally to all your contacts.

does this mean that there won’t be any classes on Monday?

  2. Dharm

sorry we dont….we support our studies…
anf hoping it ends by this week

  3. Laura S

I will not be supporting or encouraging CUPE 3903 behaviours and demands. My education is on hold because of your selfish union demands. Ask your remaining union members for support!

  4. Laura

THIS IS FALSE. CUPE is being manipulative yet again. Guess what? The rally is for students AGAINST the strike, and is in support of us going back to our studies, not the union.

    Read: we are selfish too!
Let’s all remember that it wasn’t the union that canceled classes for undergraduates, shall we.

  7. Dharm

We are not supporting any union neither University….we support our studies…
and that is what we are here for…these dirty strikes are not what we are part of.
BE PREPARED FOR THE ANTI-STRIKE SUPPORT RALLY…..
Remember…we demand to stop the strike as soon as possible.

  8. Nathan

For those who blame the admin for cancelling classes:

    Wasn’t 2000/01 absolute chaos?

  9. yorkstrike2008

    @Dharm

I agree. Taking sides will not amount to anything. We need to define our own position on the issue and fight for it.

  10. Laura S

now lets all beat our chests and cheer like CUPE 3903 members did in the videos from the meeting! haha

  11. Laura S

the university had no choice but to cancel classes due to the union!

  12. ff

    Laura,
As Nathan reminds us, in 2000/01 the school did have a choice, and it didn’t force the cessation of classes, the results were chaotic and divisive. This strike is overwhelmingly supported by full time faculty, and keep in mind who will be noticing you when you go tomorrow to tell the people that mark your papers that you don’t respect their right to a living wage.

  13. Nathan

Or… if you want to take it from a different viewpoint:

The union made crossing the lines so difficult in 2000/01 that the administration had to cancel classes, for the sake of the students, this time around.

The truth is likely (as always) somewhere in between.

By the way ff, that last line can come across as a threat. I would sincerely hope my fellow TAs would be objective, and not mark papers based on what their students thought of them.

  14. Laura S

I don’t respect their right to strike! We all have financial concerns….deal with it! I’ve paid York over $30,000, I too earn below the poverty line and I don’t complain. This was something I decided to undertake. I recognized the financial setbacks of pursuing a degree and I’m sure graduate students are well aware of this as well!

Who will notice me? In other words, am I supposed to be careful about what I say because one of my TA’s may see me and mark me poorly? Is that how a TA’s marks ones work. Is it based on who I am and what I support and believe in and not the quality of my work?

  15. Anne

Haha! ff, That almost sounded like intimidation. It’s nice to know that our TAs have such character that they will take whose paper they are marking into consideraton.

Is there going to be a student protest against the strike? I want to be there.

  16. Dharm

I agree that TA’a might have demands that are not fulfilled….but the broader pictures is about students…50,000 students who are affected.
LETS BE PART OF ANTI STRIKE RALLY ON MONDAY…….
COME TO YORK ON MONDAY 9 TH AND SUPPORT ANTI STRIKE RALLY…
(Dont get mixed with the supporters of strike……)
Remember…we do not belongs to any politics……..
WE ARE THE VICTIMS……..AND WE NEED TO RAISE TEH VOICE….

  17. Laura S

If so, perhaps when it comes to course director and TA evaluations at the end of this year, I too should remind myself of the strike and set this as a basis

  18. Anne

I don’t have facebook, can someone give me more information if there is an anti-strike rally tomorrow? Or as I think we should call it, CounterStrike ’08…

  19. Dharm

    JOIN THE GROUP..

  20. Dharm

THE RALLY IS NOT TAKING PLACE TOMORROW!!!!!! I AM CURRENTLY SITTING IN ON THE MEETING… DETAILS WILL BE POSTED LATER IN THE OFFICIAL GROUP WE HAVE DECIDED ON. http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=44571865743

  21. ff

I didn’t mean anything as a threat, I’m an undergraduate and I have no power – I think that most people respect others that take a reasoned position of opposition, but the calls of “you’re selfish!” come off as childish and uninformed.

Just remember that the more you slag off York in evaluations, and in public, the more your degree – which as you point out has cost you so much money (to say nothing of any learning you may have incidentally incurred in the payment process) – will drop in value.

  22. JMac

How long does the strike have to last in order for a student to lose their semester or term?

  23. Eyeroller

If undergrads want their voices listened to, they should do some fact research. The majority of those who are speaking out against the union (using this site and the Facebook site as an example) come off as uneducated about the issues. If you argue without knowing what you are talking about, your opinion will not be taken seriously by either side.

  24. yorkstrike2008

    @Eyeroller

This site is designed to educate people on what the facts are. The demands and offers by both sides and the state that they are all in are all available on this site. They are not on Facebook sites.

  25. Tee

Seriously.. How long does this strike look like it will be?

  26. I think this whole thing is just ridiculous. 41% is wayy too much to ask for, most people would take the 9.25% and be happy.
We are in an economic crisis right now and so so so many people would be glad just to have their job back.
I’m an undergrad student and I get paid $80 a week, I also have to pay tutition. You live with it.
I want to get the education that I paid so much money for, the money I DON’T have.
